If residents of Northeastern Pennsylvania had to pick one thing to brag about, it would be their outdoor landscapes. And not just the ones surrounding their personal property – instead, the many parks and other places for outdoor pursuits would be the ones mentioned. The four parks and outdoor attractions listed below are just a few the many things to do in this area that residents and visitors shouldn’t forget about.
1) Lehigh Gorge State Park, White Haven, PA
This state park has a little bit of everything as far as nature is concerned: waterfalls, the Lehigh River, and a series of rocky outcroppings. If you like outdoor adventure, then traversing the class II and III rapids on the Lehigh River might just be the way that you’d like to spend your days off of work. However, if you prefer tamer outdoor entertainment, the biking and hiking trails might be more your speed.
2) Wilkes-Barre Riverfront Park, Wilkes-Barre, PA
Located in downtown Wilkes-Barre right on the banks of the Susquehanna River, this park is home to many different outdoor activities, including the yearly Chalkfest, a series of seasonal farmer’s markets, and outdoor music courtesy of the many local bands and musical organizations that play at the Northampton Amphitheater Portal. There is also a yearly Riverfest, complete with dragon boat races, food vendors and free fishing.
3) Montage Mountain Ski Resort, Scranton, PA
Some people like warm weather, while outdoor winter sports enthusiasts can’t wait for the snow to start flying. If you fall into the latter category, then Montage Mountain Ski Resort is the place for you. This ski resort is located in Scranton, PA and 26 trails designed especially for both skiers and snowboarders. It has a peak elevation of 1,960 feet, and a total drop in elevation of 1,000 feet. The many trails are divided into marked categories for beginners, intermediate, advanced and All Postsexpert skiers. When you’re done skiing (or just need a break) you can relax in the Montage Mountain lodge.
4) Frances Slocum State Park, Wyoming, PA
Fishing, sledding, camping, hunting, hiking and cross country skiing are just a few of the many outdoor activities that await you in Frances Slocum State Park. The 165 acre park is centered around Frances Slocum Lake, which contains a number of perch, walleye, catfish, both large and smallmouthed bass, pickerel and crappie. Ice fishing is allowed in the winter, and the lake is stocked with trout every spring. On top of this, there are 13 miles worth of hiking trails and a 100 spot camping area. Basically, if you like the outdoors, you will enjoy the time that you spend at Frances Slocum State Park.
The outdoors aren’t for everyone, but those who do prefer to spend their time off of work out in the woods, fishing on the river, or skiing down a slope will be happy in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The three parks and one ski resort listed above are just a sampling the many outdoor pursuits that await you in this area.
