There is no shortage of things to do in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Both visitors and natives can visit the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs Casino, check out a performance at the F. M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts or the Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre, or take in some local history at the Luzerne County Historical Society. Of course, there is also plenty of shopping. The city of Wilkes-Barre and its surrounding area is home to many small, local boutiques and interesting shops. Not sure of where to start? Here are four great places to begin.
1) Gosh Yarn It! 303 Market Street, Kingston, PA 18704
If you (or a loved one) like to knit, crochet, or do crafts of any kind in your spare time, then Gosh Yarn It! should be on your list of places to shop. Gosh Yarn It! sells yarn from over 40 different manufacturers and brands in many different colors and fibers. Wool, yak, alpaca, cashmere, linen, llama and microfiber yarns are only a sampling of the many different types available. Gosh Yarn It! also offers classes, sells various patterns, and caters to knitters and crocheters of all skill levels.
2) Outrageous, 41 S. Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701
Whether you are shopping for yourself or are looking for a unique gift, look no further than Outrageous. This boutique sells locally made jewelry and handbags, as well as vintage items, like household knickknacks and unusual kitchen items. Gloves, scarves, head wraps and hats designed to keep you from being overly affected by the cold, as well as well accessorized, can also be found here. Even if your taste does not range to the “outrageous” there is sure to be something in this shop that catches your eye.
3) Studio M Designs, 133 Division Street, Kingston, PA 18704
It can be tough to find just the right piece of jewelry. That is where Studio M Designs comes in. This shop specializes in semi-precious stone jewelry, like that made of turquoise, lapis lazuli and quartz. They also sell raw stones, and polished stones that have not yet been made into bracelets, necklaces and rings, so you can either make that ideal item yourself or find someone to do it for you. If you collect larger chunks of crystals, you are in luck here as well.
4) Gallery of Sound, 186 Mundy Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702
Just because “everyone” is buying MP3s these days, that does not mean that vinyl records and CDs have gone extinct. Instead, they are sold to collectors and audiophiles at stores like Gallery of Sound. Here you can buy both new and used records and CDs, as well as DVDs. The store also has events, featuring performances by local bands.
No matter what you are looking for, you can find it in the Wilkes-Barre area. Local shops that specialize in semi precious stone jewelry, new and vintage accessories, vinyl records and even yarn enthusiasts (okay, crafters) are all located here. Why go to large chain store if you don’t have to?
