Scranton, Pennsylvania is a college town. It is home to five different universities, including Lackawanna College, Marywood University and the University of Scranton. With all of those college students in the area, it’s no wonder that Scranton has plenty of bars to hang out in. The top four bars in Scranton are known not only for their alcoholic beverages, but also their relaxed atmospheres and meal options. You won’t regret spending time in one of these pubs!
1) Backyard Ale House, 523 Linden Street, Scranton, PA 18503
The Backyard Ale House is known for the massive variety of beers that it has available. There are 28 different drafts and over 500 bottled options, ranging from the classics like Guinness Stout and Miller Lite to the more unique, for example, the Hopfive IPA from the local Susquehanna Brewing Company and #9 from the Magic Hat Brewing Company based in Burlington, Vermont. The food that they serve shouldn’t be overlooked either – Welsh rarebit and seared Ahi tuna share the menu with classic burgers and fries.
2) Mickey Gannon’s, 1925 Sanderson Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509
The nondescript looks of the building hide the classic pub that lies within. Mickey Gannon’s has been in business for over 20 years, serving up burgers, wings and French fries, along with drinks of all kinds. The interior is oddly arranged, but decorated to look like an Irish pub, and the prices are affordable. You won’t be disappointed by the fun hiding within those walls.
3) Jack’s Draft House, 802 Prescott Avenue, Scranton, PA 18510
Jack’s Draft House recently underwent a change in management, turning it from a place that caters to college clientele to one that all adults can enjoy. The interior has been redecorated, and now has live entertainment every Thursday night. The acts booked tend to be local, and are more along the lines of indie jazz trios and artists that you will not hear elsewhere. Whether you’re there for the music, the food (which consists of mostly Panini sandwiches and appetizers), or the unique European bottled beers, you’re in for a good time.
4) Rusty Nail, 732 South Irving Avenue, Scranton, PA 18505
The Rusty Nail is home to plenty of fun activities (besides socializing, of course.) Rather than book live acts like some bars, the fun at the Rusty Nail consists of a dart board, pool tables and a shuffleboard table – guaranteed entertainment, whether you’re playing or just watching your fellow patrons. The food is good, and it consists mostly of classic bar foods like wings and burgers. The drinks are fairly classic as well. If you’re looking for a basic bar with friendly clientele, look no further than the Rusty Nail.
If you’re looking for good food, a large number of drink choices and some fun, then make sure to check out one of these four bars. Each has its own unique attributes, and is some place that you’ll only find in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Although you may have to deal with a few crowds, especially on the weekends, the drinks and food make the aggravation worthwhile.
