Segway of Scranton began in the Spring of 2011. An autumn glide experience taken in Washington, DC propelled Dick Powell to bring the joy of the Segway™ experience to his hometown. Dick has always been fascinated by technology. The true Greenness of the environmentally friendly battery operated Segway machines coupled with sophisticated gyroscopes creates a magic carpet ride that is especially appealing in the day and age when gasoline is approaching $5 a gallon.

Scranton has been undergoing a renaissance in the past ten years. The vibrancy of the Downtown area and upgrades at local parks were factors in the launch of this venture. With a young emerging mobile professional class rapidly filling up the downtown residential community Segway naturally followed its market.

The national attention focused on Scranton due to the Office television program and subsequent Office Convention hosted by the University of Scranton has exposed many of our local “secrets” such as Coney Island Texas Wieners, Nay Aug Park, The Radisson Hotel at Lackawanna Station and the Lackawanna Iron Furnaces. The Historical Tour of the Hill Section’s Mansions and new Downtown segments of the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority Rails to Trails are also highlights. The ever expanding University of Scranton Campus and the open park type renovation of the Lackawanna County Courthouse as well as new boutique shops, coffee houses, and restaurant patios springing up within the downtown make for enjoyable stops while one explores during a glide.

Because of the recent improvements to downtown Scranton sidewalks and curbing the City of Scranton is handicapped accessible. Devices such as electric wheelchairs, jazzy power chairs, handicapped scooters and Segways known collectively as Electronic Personal Assistive Mobility Devices (EPAMD) can navigate with safety.

For many people who may not attempt a 4 mile walking tour, a Segway glide could open a pathway to exploration that may have been out of reach. And it is JUST PLAIN FUN !!!!
